Come and See
Pictures
Pictures that illustrate life as it was can help visitors identify with Icelanders from the past and view the artefacts of the period in the context in which they might have been used or appeared in the community.
The images relate to various different periods and contexts, such as the settlement, the pagan world-view, convent life, the first printing press, trade monopoly, the life of a drifter, and emigration to the West.
The pictures are kept in folders next to leather seats throughout the exhibition halls. The topic of each folder relates to its place in the exhibition. In most folders the artist has drawn artefacts that are in nearby exhibition cases. That way the visitor gets an idea of its use and appearance in the past.
