19th-Century Exhibits
During the 19th century our image of the Icelanders is much clarified. Museums have examples of technology and tools, although yet more would be collected in the 20th century. Photography was invented and developed in the 19th century, revolutionising our ability to examine and interpret the past. As in the previous period, carvings, embroideries and weaving constitute an important part of the collection, while everyday objects are added.
It was during this period that the National Museum of Iceland was founded, creating entirely new potential for conservation. Important historical objects were saved from destruction. The museum’s pioneers knew much of history, and this influenced the choice of objects placed in the museum. Collection of everyday objects would not commence for some decades. The first legislation on the National Museum was passed at the beginning of the 20th century.
