Whittling through history
Would you like to learn to whittle some wood and read a tree? Ólafur Oddsson, an established whittler, teaches a safe way to wield the knife and starts you off with a fun whittling project. The teaching takes place in a grove outside the museum and starts at 2:30 pm.
You will gain knowledge of the method and see what you could make by learning the paring techniques well. A new group starts every 20 minutes until 4:30 pm. Those who have finished a session, or are waiting for their turn, can join a brief guided tour on carving and whittled toys in the museum.
Ólafur, the master artisan, brings all you need; raw materials and knives for everyone and not least the craftsman's ideas and wisdom. You will work with a short branch that could easily become a magic wand with good whittling. Show up at the National Museum and you will be given the next available space in a group. Maximum eight children in a group.
Whittling is suitable for children from 7 years of age. Ólafur Oddsson has held whittling courses for 20 years. He emphasizes reading the wood and relating to our age-old history of decorating household objects.
