Polish roots and daily life in Iceland

  • March 16th 2024 - May 20th 2024

"I thought I landed on the moon..."

The National Museum of Iceland collects narratives from Polish citizens in Iceland. The exhibition presents a fraction of the answers and photographs that the National Museum has already received.

"I thought I landed on the moon, I was terrified and I thought to myself: How will I walk on these stones in my high heels...???"

"Generally, it is better not to speak your native language with your colleagues at work. I use Polish freely ONLY when I meet friends."

"During my visits to Poland, I experience small things that I miss very much: putting on a summer dress, the rustle of leaves in the park, the taste of Polish tomatoes and bread."
(Sentences from participants in the research.)

The National Museum of Iceland collects narratives from Polish citizens in Iceland. This ethnographic research aims at collecting information about the experience people with Polish roots have of staying and living in Iceland.

The exhibition presents a fraction of the answers and photographs that the National Museum has already received. The collection will continue until the end of 2024 and all of the submitted material will be registered into the ethnographic collection of the National Museum of Iceland. This material will be very useful for scholars and others that intend to investigate what it is to be a Polish Icelander.
