Vikings at the National Museum of Iceland
Welcome to the National Museum of Iceland on Culture Night and enjoy various events. Free admission and open from 10am to 5pm. All events in and around the National Museum of Iceland on Culture Night relate to the Viking Age in Iceland. The permanent exhibition Making of a Nation – Heritage and History in Iceland takes you on a journey of Icelandic history from the settlement period through the 20th century. You can choose to follow the Rainbow Thread, which is a queer guide to permanent exhibition, created in collaboration with Samtökin ‘78, the National Queer Organization of Iceland.
The Family Room is for families, school groups and other curious visitors. There kids can play with sheep bones and wood blocks and do make-believe farming. There are also drawings to colour and a fun DIY workshop. The micro-exhibition; Trash or Treasure? in the Family Room, with Icelandic packaging collected by the barber Andrés Johnson in the town of Hafnarfjörður. Had he not been interested in graphic design, this assemblage would not exist. The DIY workshop has used packaging and magazines to cut, colour, glue and shape into your own work of art, thus turning Trash into Treasure!
Orienteering games such as the Museum Bingo and The Search for the Runes are an ideal tool for families to have fun while gaining insight into the history of Iceland at the museum.
The National Museum's Café welcomes visitors with refreshments that, among other things, are in the day's Viking theme.
The Museum Shop offers a stylish and educational atmosphere. Various specially produced goods and handicrafts are on offer alongside a diverse selection of books on Icelandic language, art, and culture. A selection of memorabilia and toys related to the Viking Age are for sale in celebration of today's theme.
There are four special exhibitions in the museum, two of which address the first centuries of Icelandic history: From Mire to Metal and Saga of Hofstaðir, Unearthing the Past in North Iceland. The other two are the photo exhibitions In the Shadow, on women pioneers in photography, and Nicoline Weywadt, the first Icelandic female photographer.
Admission is free on Culture Night. All are welcome!
