Family Event: Back to the Past with the Viking Reenactment Group Rimmugýgur

The National Museum of Iceland offers exciting events every Sunday throughout the winter and spring months. The first Sunday of each month is dedicated to activities for children and families, while other Sundays feature expert-guided tours of the museum's exhibitions. On the last Sunday of each month, the guided tour is conducted in a foreign language.
Members of the Viking reenactment group Rimmugýgur will stage a friendly "invasion" of the National Museum's permanent exhibition, inviting families with children to meet them and learn about life during the Viking Age.
Dressed in full Viking attire, they will demonstrate various traditional crafts and games, including hnefatafl (a Viking board game) and ball games. Visitors will have the opportunity to try their hand at these activities and learn more about them. The tools and objects used by the reenactors are based on archaeological artefacts displayed in the museum's exhibition cases. These include hnefatafl sets, combs, spindles, jewellery and much more. It is as though the museum's artefacts come to life in the hands of people who know how to use them.
In the play area on the ground floor, children can put together a Viking burial puzzle, play with old-fashioned toys, colour pictures, try on costumes and explore Viking-themed toys.
Come and watch the National Museum's permanent exhibition come to life with Rimmugýgur!
A museum admission ticket includes access to the event. Please note that every admission ticket also serves as an annual pass, providing access to all exhibitions and events organised by the museum for one year from the date of purchase.
