One of the pioneers of artists' books, Dieter Roth (1930- 1998), made his first book in Iceland around 1957. Since that time, artists' books have been part of the expression of Icelandic visual artists.

During the Reykjavik Arts Festival there will be a special exhibition of Eygló Harðardóttir's, Sculpture (2016),  and the prototype will be exhibited in the Reading Chamber in the Culture House. The exhibition commemorates the 200th anniversary of the National and University Library, but within the Library there is an increased emphasis on book art.
