A guided tour through the exhibition Making of a Nation – Heritage and History in Iceland
Take a journey of Icelandic history from the settlement period through the 20th century. The National Museum of Iceland offers a guided tour every Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays at 10.30 am. Admission ticket is needed. Tickets and registration for the guided tour are available at the reception.
The National Museum of Iceland was founded in 1863 and is one of the oldest public establishments in the country. In the beginning the museum stored its objects in various official buildings in the city center. When Iceland became an independent republic in 1944 the government agreed to build a museum house that opened its doors to the public in 1950. The museum was closed in 1998 for extensive renovation and re-opened in 2004 with the permanent exhibition Making of a Nation – Heritage and History in Iceland. The exhibition is divided into different time periods that flow in a chronological order from the time of the settlement until the end of the 20th century. Take a tour with us and get an insight into the heritage and history of Iceland.
The guided tour is free of charge with museum admission. Audio guide is available on your smartphone at any time during your visit in the museum.
