Poles in Iceland
On Tuesday May 9 at 12pm, Anna Wojtynska gives a lecture about Poles in Iceland.
Poles are the largest immigrant group in Iceland, making almost 40% of the foreign and 4% of the total population in Iceland. Majority came in relation to work, finding employment predominantly in the construction industry, manufacturing, including food processing and low-skilled services. Typically, the stay was meant to be temporary but often prolonged and even altered into permanent. Many Poles, even if settled in Iceland, maintain strong relations with Poland, visiting their family and friends there, following news or sending remittances. Based on the ethnographic research, the lecture focuses on these different transnational activities pursued by Polish migrants in Iceland.
The lecture is in English.
Anna Wojtynska is an anthropologist and a doctoral student at the University of Iceland, currently completing her dissertation about Polish migrants in Iceland.
